If you are on a budget but looking to make a noticeable upgrade in your home, interior paint is a perfect option! From walls and ceilings to cabinets and trim, upgrading the interior paint in your job can make a noticeable difference friends and family will appreciate. Often though, color choices can be overwhelming and what might seem like a good color choice in the store turns out to be less than favorable when applied. When deciding on an interior color for your home, consider trends, styles and personal preferences.

Trends

In recent years, the trends in interior design colors have fluctuated between bold and beautiful and timeless/classic. The year 2025 was no exception. According to two of the major paint brands, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams, the trending paint colors of the year were more grounded than years prior but you can still find pops of rich, bold colors.

Benjamin Moore reported this year's most popular color to be Cinnamon Slate. This color brings together warmth and boldness with a unique mix of plum and brown tones. This particular color could make for a bold accent wall or go big and paint an entire room with Cinnamon Slate to create a warm, inviting space. Additionally, homeowners have used Cinnamon Slate to upgrade their bathroom or kitchen cabinets to give them a fresh, rich tone that is vibrant and inviting.

Sherwin-Williams reported a combination of colors, a capsule rather than one singular color the year in 20205. The report highlights homeowners' desire for options that are both traditional and timeless as well as bold splashes of color. From a rich dark brown color, “Grounded,” to the more lively, airy pink color,  “Mauve Finery,” the collection brings together an array of warmth and naturalist elements.

Trends can often lead the way when choosing an interior paint color and are important to consider. If trends seem too risky, consider choosing colors that match a certain interior design style.

Style

When it comes to interior paint colors and style, consider the most common interior design styles. From classic Neutrals to Bohemian, styles can help guide your interior design color choices.

Neutral styles tend to create a simple, clean background that can highlight any type of decor and interior design style. Choosing a neutral color allows for a timeless, clean look that can adjust with your changing styles and preferences. If you are unsure about interior paint choice color, neutrals such as beige, taupes, creams and grays are a safe option.

Warm and cool tones allow you to bring specific feels and energy into a space. For instance, warm tones such as yellow, red and orange are great for bringing in energy! On the contrary blushes like pink bring in a softness and warmth to a space. Cool tones remain popular as well and can include shades of blues and greens. Blue can often be found in bedrooms to create a serene space while greens are seen as more calming and natural.

Bohemian is a bold choice that can really highlight your personal style and personality. Often, Bohemian colors are an eclectic mix with bright jewel tones like Ruby Red or Emerald green mixed with warmer earthy tones such as Terracotta, Mustard Yellow or Olive Green. Bohemian interior colors can really bring a space to life and give it a rich, fun personality.

Personal Preferences

While trends and interior design style can guide you to make an interior color choice for your home, personal preferences ultimately determine what makes the space right for you. When thinking about an interior paint color, it’s important to think about how you want your space to feel. If you are looking for tranquility after a long day in your bedroom, consider what colors naturally bring you peace when you view them. In your kitchen, think about colors that bring your joy or give you a sense of family. Often, thinking about your own personal color palette in everyday life can give you the best guidance to choosing an interior paint color.
